Under What Conditions Does Transverse Macrodispersion Exist in Groundwater Flow?

چکیده
Abstract In recent years there has been vigorous debate whether asymptotic transverse macrodispersion exists in steady three‐dimensional (3D) groundwater flows the purely advective limit. This question is tied to topology of 3D flow paths (termed Lagrangian kinematics ), specifically streamlines can undergo braiding motions or wander freely direction. this study we determine which Darcy do admit for transport on basis conductivity structure. We prove that porous media with smooth, locally isotropic hydraulic exhibit zero under pure advection due constraints these flows, whereas either non‐smooth anisotropic fields generate macrodispersion. implications upscaling block scale as result a conductivity, leading non‐zero at spurious it does not arise fully resolved flow. also show conventional numerical methods computation particle trajectories explicitly preserve kinematic associated flow, and propose novel psuedo‐symplectic method preserves constraints. These results provide insights into mechanisms govern unify seemingly contradictory literature consistent framework. call ability represent real heterogeneous media.

Under what conditions does theory obstruct research progress?
Researchers display confirmation bias when they persevere by revising procedures until obtaining a theory-predicted result. This strategy produces findings that are overgeneralized in avoidable ways, and this in turn hinders successful applications. (The 40-year history of an attitude-change phenomenon, the sleeper effect, stands as a case in point.) Confirmation bias is an expectable product o...
متن کاملPlug-flow does not exist in electro-osmosis
I eliminate hundred years old notion of ‘plug-flow’ in electro-osmosis, which was predicted by incomplete ‘electric double layer’ (EDL) theory. A recently developed ‘electric triple layer’ (ETL) theory removes some serious shortcomings of EDL theory regarding conservation of electric charge, and when applied to electro-osmosis, shows that the velocity profile is not ‘plug-like’ at all, but more...
متن کاملExperimental investigation of transverse mixing in porous media under helical flow conditions.
Plume dilution and transverse mixing can be considerably enhanced by helical flow occurring in three-dimensional heterogeneous anisotropic porous media. In this study, we perform tracer experiments in a fully three-dimensional flow-through chamber to investigate the effects of helical flow on plume spiraling and deformation, as well as on its dilution. Porous media were packed in angled stripes...
متن کاملUnder Blood Flow Conditions
A human ex vivo thrombosis model was used to investigate whether recombinant annexin V (rANV) can prevent thrombus formation under venous and arterial blood flow conditions. In this model, blood from an antecubital vein of healthy donors was allowed to flow directly over the extracellular matrix of tumor necrosis factor-stimulated endothelial cells (TNF-ECMs). TNF-ECMs were preincubated with rA...
